RIP “Macho Man” Randy Savage.

Just moments ago, TMZ.com broke the news that the legendary Randy “Macho Man” Savage had died in a heart attack-slash-car crash at around 3pm GMT this afternoon, and shock gripped my whole being.

I watched Macho as a kid, not through the WWF, where he became a household name, but through his move to WCW in 1994, straight into a program with Hulk Hogan. Many wondered if he was indeed going to be friends or enemies with Hogan after their WWF years. It soon transpired that the two were cohesive again as Macho saved Hogan. And who can forget the feeling of excitement as three of WCW’s top dogs teamed up to face Hall, Nash and the “mystery man” at WCW’s Bash at the Beach 1996?

Luckily, these days, we have the unlimited access to Randy’s history. It’d be hard to pinpoint one defining moment of  “Madness” for me to call my favourite. But who wouldn’t say his tenure as a 371-day World Champion for the WWF, between WrestleMania IV and WrestleMania V. Only John Cena has since broke that record.

And who can forget his unscripted behaviour, microphone skills, demeanor, intensity and borderline certifiable “Madness” in and out of the ring?

Sleep well, Randy Poffo. Rest in Peace.

UPDATE: More details have come out regarding Randy’s passing. He and his wife Lynn were driving in Florida when Randy suffered a major heart attack while behind the wheel. Attempting to steer clear of danger, Randy completely missed all on-coming traffic, but tragically collided directly with a tree. Randy was transported to a hospital where he died of his injuries. Lynn was transferred to a separate hospital with mild injuries and has survived the crash.

Hulk Hogan is said to be “completely devastated” at the news. Over the past decade, Hogan and Randy had not spoke, but recently had begun to communicate again.

He said on his official twitter page: “He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he’s happy and in a better place and we miss him. We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication.”

The Iron Shiek also took to twitter to give his thoughts: “Randy Savage, i find out you die. i cry. you are one of best and my brother. you be happy with the elizabeth. god bless you. macho man best worker. better than all. he make the wrestlemania match with ricky best ever in pontiac. I love you forever” [sic]

Many other wrestling personalities have proclaimed their sadness at the passing of one of the greatest pro-wrestlers of all time on twitter also.

I have NEVER forgotten the intricacies and attention to detail he taught me over the years. Randy always had a method to his madness. Randy is gone, but will never be forgotten. Thoughts and prayers are with the entire Poffo family.”
