Kurt Angle Interview: How he was to break Undertaker’s Streak, TNA looking at Shelton Benjamin and more!

Kurt Angle: Can't wait for the 2012 Maximum Impact Tour

Kurt Angle: Nearly ended Undertaker's streak

As many of our twitter followers will already know, Kurt Angle was part of a lengthy interview with Rob McNichol and Joel Ross on the Sun’s Wrestlecast podcast. The following are highlights of the interview, which is available for download at thesun.co.uk.

— Angle claims The Undertaker approached him to break the Undefeated Streak at WrestleMania in 2006, which was a few months prior to Angle leaving WWE for TNA, but the match didn’t materialize.

“The person who wanted to do it was Undertaker himself. I was flattered, for him to go to Vince McMahon and pitch it,” Angle said. “To me that meant a lot because Undertaker had a lot of respect for me – and I had more respect for him than he did for me.”

— Angle described going through his own rehab process to kick a painkiller addiction he carried over from WWE. Despite appearing to be glassy-eyed and slurring his speech on a recent TNA PPV, Angle claims he’s not using painkillers anymore.

“I had an issue in WWE and I think that’s the reason Vince McMahon and I became so distant. I did get myself in a position where I had a painkiller problem. I had to get myself out of it and I did that without going to rehab. I worked full time and had to go through a lot of withdrawal,” Angle said.

“I’ll never touch it again. I learned a lesson from that. Any wrestlers, or people that want to be wrestlers, that is not the thing you want to do. Stay away from that. It’s the devil. It’s not going to help you in any way or fashion. All it’s going to do is make you an addict.”

— Angle claims TNA is considering signing current ROH tag champion Shelton Benjamin.

“Shelton is the most underrated wrestler in wrestling today,” Angle said about his former World’s Greatest Tag Team protege in WWE. “TNA is thinking about bringing him in.”

— Angle evaluated Robert Roode: “I think he will be the best wrestler in the industry in two years.”

— Angle claimed he didn’t know Chyna was going to be used at TNA’s Sacrifice PPV last month until two days prior to the PPV despite Chyna’s debut being taped two weeks earlier. Angle also claimed TNA used Chyna instead of Isis the Amazon because people found out about Isis. In actuality, Isis was determined to be too green and not ready for the role.

“I didn’t know about it until about two days before the Pay-Per-View. We were going to use this other woman that was seven feet tall (Isis The Amazon), she looked incredible. But so many people found out that this girl was going to be brought in that we wanted to mix it up and shock people, so we brought in Chyna,” Angle said.

— Angle claimed TNA is “starting to have matches where we have finishes now” as part of the Impact Wrestling campaign.

“We’re not trying to protect both wrestlers,” Angle said. “That’s the way it should be because as a fan you get frustrated if you watch a whole show and all you see is DQs or run-ins and matches that don’t have finishes, it’s like ‘Gosh, I just invested all that time in watching a show and the main event ended up being a schmoz.'”
